What you need to know
It's important to let us know if your dog's details have changed, this can be done:
- using our online portal
- by emailing dog.registration@hcc.govt.nz
- in person at our Council Offices, Animal Education and Control Centre and Te Kete Aronui Rototuna Library.
1. Change of address
Staying in Hamilton
You are legally required to update your address when your dog moves to a new property. Council must be notified in writing within 14 days of moving.
Moving to another district
When your dog moves to a new district, you must notify both councils in writing within six weeks.
If you are moving out of the Hamilton City District and your dog is currently registered, your registration transfer is free of charge. You are required to register with your new district however, you will need to provide your current Hamilton City tag number and year to receive your new Council tag free of charge. Don’t forget to notify our team of the move.
If your dog is moving overseas and you have paid for a current registration – please email dog.registration@hcc.govt.nz
2. Change of contact details
Has your mobile number changed? This is the most important contact detail have accurate on your registration. This enables our staff to contact you if there is an emergency with your dog. Remember to let our team know if your mobile number or email address has changed.
3. Change of ownership
Ownership updates must be completed in writing by both parties within 14 days. The previous dog owner on the Hamilton record will be contacted by phone to confirm the change. If the dog has moved with a new owner out of the Hamilton City District, you may simply email dog.registration@hcc.govt.nz to let us know.
4. Notification of your dog's passing
We understand dogs are family members and we want to make sure we don't accidentally contact you regarding the renewal of their registration if your dog has passed away. Please notify Council within 14 days to complete a declaration.
You may also request a partial year refund if applicable.
