Candidate Statement

BSc, LLB - Build Forward

Has your home's value dropped, but your rates gone up? Let's investigate. Step one: electing someone who will ask the right questions.

Safety is the bedrock of a strong community. With degrees in law and science, and years of real-world experience, I'm committed to serving everyone in Hamilton West - from renters and retirees to families, students, and small business owners.

Let's keep rates fair while investigating in practical solutions that work. I'll push for half-price LIM reports to speed up property sales and unlock safer, affordable subdivisions for locals.

We need more secondary dwellings to ease rents, support intergenerational families, and provide secure homes for seniors and young people alike.

Your concerns matter. I'll listen, act, and work with our new Mayor to get results. roderickjy@gmail.com

Build Forward - with safer streets, fairer rates, and a better future for all.

Candidate Profile Questions

1. What would be your top three priorities for Council the next three years?

Rates fairness, safer streets, and affordable housing.

Rates have soared while services have stagnated. I will push for transparent budgets, half-price LIM reports, and value-for-money spending. We must fast-track affordable subdivisions, support intergenerational housing, and allow more secondary dwellings. Safety is foundational—I’ll support community policing and better street lighting. Build Forward means unlocking land for locals, not just speculators, and investing in the basics that keep our city liveable and fair.

2. What is your aspiration for Hamilton Kirikiriroa?

A safe, fair, and future-focused city where local families can thrive.

Hamilton should be a place where homes are affordable, streets are safe, and rates are fair. Let’s Build Forward with planning that protects green spaces, unlocks affordable housing, and respects local identity. My aspiration is a city that works for renters, homeowners, students, and seniors alike—with strong local voice at the Council table.

3. How do you think Council could best use opportunities to meet the key challenges we are facing?

By listening to the community and prioritising what matters most: housing, safety, and infrastructure.

We can’t fix everything at once, but we can start with what’s most urgent. Council should cut waste, collaborate across sectors, and unlock affordable housing supply. Tools like half-price LIMs and faster consenting can help. I’ll also advocate for co-investment with central government and iwi to future-proof our growth sustainably.

4. If there was one thing you could change about Hamilton Kirikiriroa immediately, what would it be?

Make it easier for locals to build homes for their whānau.

Right now, too many Hamiltonians are blocked from building granny flats or subdividing their sections. That needs to change. I want to remove red tape and make it easier for families to house grandparents, students, or young people starting out. We need flexible housing solutions that reflect real community needs.

5. What qualities would you bring to Council that will help our city thrive?

I bring legal insight, scientific training, real-world experience—and a strong moral compass.

With degrees in law and science, and years of advocacy experience, I bring critical thinking and practical solutions. I listen first, ask tough questions, and always look for fair outcomes. I’m not here for ego—I’m here to serve the community and Build Forward with integrity, transparency, and common sense.
