East Ward Candidate Suhair Hassan

About Suhair

Candidate Statement

As-salamu alaykum. I am Suhair Hassan. Whilst I proudly claim Waikato as my Turangawaewae Domain, I am equally proud of my Iraqis ancestry. I am the Deputy Leader of the Kiwis' Health Party, a component party of its umbrella Constitution Party, and manager shareowner of a pharmacy in the Nawton West Ward. As councillor and hopefully Deputy Mayor, I am resolved to supporting mayoral candidate Roma Warren in honouring his pledge to super grow our regional economy and personal wealth. Furthermore, I pledge to make a significant contribution to Hamiltonian's health by: Supporting all Health professionals address their corporate goals and employment career concerns; Adopting Japan's national health model to create a 'blue zone' throughout the Waikato and the Pan Asia and Pacific Area Commonwealth (PANPAC); Helping to build Hamilton's new Medical Pharmacy School, Public Hospital, student staff residencies, and our Supercities' infrastructure critical to operations.

Candidate Profile Questions

1. What would be your top three priorities for Council the next three years?

 My top three priorities are:

  1. Supporting all health professionals in their career goals and corporate responsibilities.
  2. Creating a “super high healthy zone” across Hamilton by adopting successful international health models such as Japan’s.
  3. Helping develop critical health infrastructure, including a new Medical Pharmacy School, Children’s Hospital, and residential facilities for staff and students.

These priorities reflect my strong belief that a healthy city is a prosperous city. With better infrastructure and support for our workforce, we can ensure Hamilton thrives economically, socially, and culturally.

2. What is your aspiration for Hamilton Kirikiriroa?

I aspire for Hamilton to be a world-class city of health, wellbeing, and opportunity. A place where every resident has access to high-quality healthcare, meaningful work, and a supportive community. I want to see Hamilton lead Aotearoa in building health-focused infrastructure, medical education, and economic innovation. My vision is for Hamilton to become a “super high healthy zone,” setting new standards for quality of life, inspired by successful models like Japan’s. I want our city to be known for its inclusion, resilience, and ambition.

3. How do you think Council could best use opportunities to meet the key challenges we are facing?

Council must lead boldly by partnering with experts, communities, and industries to deliver long-term solutions. Health is foundational to every aspect of a city’s success—from education and employment to urban planning and community safety. Council can meet key challenges by investing in health infrastructure, supporting medical education, and fostering innovation. Working alongside stakeholders to develop facilities like a Children’s Hospital and a Medical Pharmacy School will not only address health needs but also stimulate economic growth. These opportunities should be seized now for future generations.

4. If there was one thing you could change about Hamilton Kirikiriroa immediately, what would it be?

I would elevate the city’s commitment to public health by declaring Hamilton a pilot “super high healthy zone.” This shift would immediately influence planning, funding, and community services—focusing our efforts on creating a healthier, happier population. Prioritising health doesn’t just mean treating illness; it means designing a city where wellness is built into everything we do—from accessible clinics and green spaces to education and workforce support. This bold step could transform Hamilton’s future and become a national model.

5. What qualities would you bring to Council that will help our city thrive?

I bring a unique blend of leadership, healthcare expertise, business acumen, and multicultural understanding. As Deputy Leader of the Kiwis' Health Party and a pharmacy owner in Nawton West Ward, I understand both frontline health needs and strategic planning. I am passionate, pragmatic, and committed to building a stronger, healthier community. I also bring a diverse perspective as a proud Iraqi New Zealander grounded in Waikato values. These experiences shape my inclusive and solution-focused approach to governance.
