Candidate Statement

True representation is found by consultation with constituents, the minds of many can bring the intellect to the table. Enhanced communication brings rapport and trust that finds the concerns, interests and solutions. My background from the trades with different economic principles helps reforms that provides a focus on the working class, a city that functions with economic activity, the ability to mobilise and to balance the work life with a family life, a social life, a personal life. Yes we have fiscal responsibility and yes I bring a vision for the city as we all do, a vision that accommodates new ideas and processes but cannot be done by one person alone. We all participate, we all benefit from our community. Our city is unique our environment like no other, an opportunity to develop the identity and potential our communities deserve.

Candidate Profile Questions

1. What would be your top three priorities for Council the next three years?

Fiscal responsibility. Determine principles for council to operate within its means.

Interest on debt holds an element of financial suicide, dishonours rate payers.

Determining other revenue streams for council and revise the present antiquated rate system.

An active local economy is sufficient to help fund governance over our home owner’s obligations of rates determined from the speculative housing market.

Implement a conscious shift to governance.  Enhance communication with interest groups and constituents and determine values, these shifts through the times.

Review orthodox roles and purposes for Council and allow contemporary methods to meet objectives and achievements.

Implement and prioritise principles.  The functionality of the city in all its obligations, logistics, recreation and business holds a balance for a quality in life and peoples livelihood. It is not enough to push for growth but economic development and innovation.

2. What is your aspiration for Hamilton Kirikiriroa

To have a functioning city in all the aspects of society e.g. in recreation, ambitions, career and personal developments and to accommodate innovation, zero to one. An active CBD in business, entertainment, services and creation parallel to primary sectors so as to develop balanced lifestyles.

3. How do you think Council could best use opportunities to meet the key challenges we are facing?

Hamilton has a huge opportunity to develop in many sectors; it has the centres for education, business and logistics. Economic reform is a possibility to provide services without passing the financial burden to rate payers, it is not always about growth. But the city must have a balance, to work with new ideas, to work with nature, to work with business and its people.

4. If there was one thing you could change about Hamilton Kirikiriroa immediately, what would it be?

Its vision, encapsulated with an identity that has our working city offer dynamic life styles and purpose. There is more to an economy then GDP, there is more to a community then numbers and margins, there is social essence and there is pride. To support peoples visions e.g. entrepreneurs, the enthusiasm and drive to achieve in business, sport, education and philosophy. The orthodox roles of governance with contemporary concepts helps develop an identity for Hamilton to present a living standard and quality of life, that includes addressing urgent issues like homelessness, to acknowledge the national influence a local response is necessary. We need intellectual environments to flourish so as to expand concepts and ideas.

5. What qualities would you bring to Council that will help our city thrive?

Pragmatism, informed debates raising principles and purpose for policies, the argument must hold true. Question the status quo, allow new theories to be voiced.

Rhetoric needs fact, the likes of growth means little for the homeless and the hungry, a new era to view different values, philosophy and virtues. The youth and the pensioner, wisdom and the student all hold a place in the community.

Progressive, Welcome change when determined for the better. Strong on benefit/risk analysis and consultation. Hamilton’s opportunities are numerous, the preparation to take them is fundamental, opportunities derive from solid governance, priorities determined, obligations met and core services performing well.

Cohesion, A team player, determining objectives presents avenues to pursue, consensus sought. The ability to acknowledge the current situation and allow time for intervention to take hold, large sudden changes in policies can be disruptive. Ideas held by others once they are valued are easily accommodated.
