Wondering if your business can operate on Good Friday and Easter Sunday?
In 2017, local councils asked their communities if shops in their area could open on Easter Sunday. Hamiltonians ultimately decided to stick with the Shop Trading Hours Act, meaning most businesses will remain closed on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday unless they have a specific exemption.
Which businesses can open?
Certain businesses are allowed to open on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Businesses that can operate include:
- petrol stations
- pharmacies
- dairies
- cafes, restaurants, and fast-food outlets
- duty-free stores
- shops providing services (like hairdressers)
- souvenir shops
- some shops at public transport terminals, exhibitions, shows, or markets.
Garden centres have a special exemption – they are allowed to open on Easter Sunday, but not Good Friday.
Which businesses must remain closed?
Many businesses are required to remain closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday due to the Shop Trading Hours Act. This includes large retail stores, supermarkets, and department stores. General retail stores that do not fall under the specific exemptions listed above must also close.
