Surcharges
Why is there a surcharge on some parking payments?
A surcharge covers the cost of processing electronic payments made using PayWave at an on-street parking kiosk or through the PayMyPark app.
How will I know if a surcharge applies?
Any applicable surcharges will be shown before you confirm and complete the total amount payable for your transaction.
Why isn’t the surcharge included in the parking fee?
The parking fee and payment processing fees are separate charges. The parking fee is set by Council, while the processing fee is charged by payment service providers and can vary depending on the payment method used. Applying a surcharge ensures that only customers using those payment methods pay the associated transaction costs, rather than those costs being funded by Hamilton ratepayers or from parking revenue.
Is the surcharge kept by Council?
No. The surcharge covers payment processing and merchant fees for electronic transactions. Council does not receive a financial benefit from the surcharge payment.
Why doesn't Touch n Go have a surcharge?
Council currently covers the transaction costs associated with Touch n Go payments, so customers only pay the parking fee. Touch n Go was introduced as an additional convenient payment option.
Why doesn't Council absorb all payment processing costs?
Payment processing costs are incurred only when certain payment methods are used. Applying a surcharge allows these costs to be recovered from the users of those payment methods, rather than being funded through parking revenue or Hamilton ratepayers. This helps ensure costs are allocated directly to those who generate them.
