Major roadwork projects
Avalon Drive
From 24 March 2026, we will be resurfacing and rebuilding sections on Avalon Drive. This work will be completed in stages. See the latest update below.
Current stage and timeframe
From Thursday 9 April, we'll begin stage two (Rotokauri roundabout to Dominion road). This stage is expected to be complete by 12 April, weather permitting.
Road closure
Stage two will be carried out under a full road closure from 7pm to 6am. The footpath will stay open throughout. Please follow detour signs and instructions from our crew.
Normandy Avenue (SH3)
From 16 March 2026 we will be carrying out wastewater renewals at the roundabout of Normandy Avenue (SH3) and Ohaupo Road (SH1c). This work will not close the road but there may be shoulder and lane closures, and an increase in traffic.
Works are expected to end in May 2026. The first two weeks will be nightworks only, as we carry out enabling works. The following work will be day work only to renew the pipes. The most disruptive works aims to be done over the school holidays with crews continuing to work over Easter.
For general project information, please see notification to residents and businesses - March 2026.
All dates in here are subject to change due to the nature of underground works and weather. We will keep this section here updated with timeframes as we progress.
Morrinsville Road upgrades
We’re making some changes to Morrinsville Road to make the road safer, easier to maintain and will provide better travel options. This includes building a roundabout at the intersections of Morrinsville Road, Matangi Road and Silverdale Road.
From 16 February until late May we’re closing some roads so the roundabout can be built quickly. These roads are:
- Silverdale Road: closed at Morrinsville Road (no entry/exit)
- Matangi Road: closed at Morrinsville Road (no entry/exit)
- Morrinsville Road: closed between East Ridge Grove and Jansen Park’s northeast edge (East Ridge Road stays open). U-turn facilities provided.
All these roads will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.
We’re also building a new signalised pedestrian crossing southwest of Matangi Road, shared paths, separated cycle lanes, and raised crossings. All parts of the project is expected to be completed by August 2026.
Ulster Street and Maeroa Road
From March to June 2026, we’re making a series of improvements along Ulster Street and Maeroa Road to enhance safety and accessibility. This work includes installing new traffic signals at the Ulster Street/Maeroa Road intersection and permanently closing the Maeroa Road east entrance (left turn out will remain open). We’ll also be renewing the footpath, kerb, and channel along Ulster Street.
Current stage and timeframe
Due to recent bad weather, the start of these works has been delayed. Construction is now expected to begin on Monday 30 March.
We will start by upgrading the footpath, kerb, and channel on the eastern (river) side of Ulster Street, before moving to the intersection. During this stage, work will take place Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm.
Lane closure
One city-bound traffic lane will be closed from 6am each weekday, but traffic will still be able to travel in both directions. Please expect delays and allow extra time for your journey.
