Supporting EV use in Hamilton

We choose to promote sustainable travel choices and supports emerging transport technologies, including electric vehicles (EVs). We’ve partnered with WEL Networks, which operates the local electricity distribution network, and Better NZ Trust to explore, share, and develop ways to encourage EV adoption across the city. Working with WEL Networks helps us better understand the impacts of EVs on the electricity network and guide the progressive rollout of charging infrastructure in key city and destination locations.

Hamilton now hosts public electric vehicle charging hubs delivered in partnership with Hikotron at various locations around the city. These hubs provide 7kW AC charging points designed to support residents, visitors, and local businesses, allowing drivers to conveniently top up their vehicles while shopping, working, dining, sightseeing, or attending appointments nearby. The chargers form part of Hikotron’s growing nationwide public charging network and can be activated using the Hikotron mobile app or contactless payment.
