Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is a 60-hectare park located on the northwest outskirts of Hamilton, across the road from Hamilton Zoo.
The vision for the park is to create a self-sustaining habitat that represents the original and diverse ecosystem of Hamilton. This involves creating native lowland and wetland ecosystems, which were once widespread but are now rare in the Waikato.
Restoration plantings on the formerly grazed pasture are being staged in zones, originally focusing on the margin of the peat lake, and now expanding onto the hill slopes and ridge crests.
The planting and maintenance of the park relies heavily on volunteers. To find out how you can volunteer, please visit our community planting page.
Dogs are not allowed inside Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park.
