Step 1: YOU

What you need to know

Resource consents are usually granted for five years. Check the conditions on your consent for specific timeframes. If you think work won’t be completed before your resource consent period ends, you can apply for an extension.

To extend the time your resource consent is valid for, you must:

  • show you have made efforts to fulfill the purpose and conditions of the consent
  • ideally, apply at least six months before your consent lapses.

If your consent lapses before your extension has been approved, you will need to apply for a new resource consent.

To apply for an extension to your resource consent, you must provide:

  • a statement on how much extra time you need
  • a timeline showing progress since consent was granted
  • written approval of anyone potentially affected by a possible time extension
  • assessment of effects of the time extension on the District Plan.

whether anyone is likely to be affected by the extension of time
whether there have been any changes to the District Plan since your consent was granted.

If your extension is granted, we’ll let you know your new resource consent end date.
