Project Summary

What we're doing

We’re installing facilities so people can change how they travel mid-journey. This includes safe, covered, and well-lit areas to store a bike or scooter for longer periods of time, as well as the ability to charge e-bikes and scooters.

The new facilities include:

  • new stainless steel bike racks
  • covered bike shelters (green roof and solar panels to be assessed)
  • bike repair stations
  • scooter and e-bike charging stations.

Why we're doing it

In 2022, we ran a survey to ask where you would like future parking infrastructure for bikes and scooters.

We also asked you what is working well with our current bike and scooter parking, and what is not working, so we can make improvements.

The feedback provided through the survey has informed this instalment of bike and scooter parking throughout Hamilton.

Council’s vision for our transport network is that more people choose to travel on foot, by bus, or using micro-mobility devices such as bikes and scooters.

This project is funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Transport Choices programme and it will help create a connected network across the city, supporting Council’s move to a low emissions transport system in response to climate change.

This project will

  • Increase bike and scooter parking options

  • Provide e-bike charging stations

  • Safe areas for mid-journey stops

Where are we at

  • Stage 1 - Planning

    September 2023

Public feedback has closed, and the project has moved to the design phase. It will be considered by Waka Kotahi for construction approval in September 2023.
  • Stage 2 - Underway

    December 2023

With final design and construction approval from Waka Kotahi, we expect work to begin in December 2023.
  • Stage 3 - Completed

    April 2024

Our goal is to complete the project in April 2024. All projects in the Transport Choices programme will be completed by June 2024.

Frequently asked questions

How can people use the new parking?

Parking facilities include steel lock stands, which can be used for short term use like going to a café, or covered bike parking facilities for longer term use like commuting to work for the day.

How did we choose where to put the new facilities?

In 2022, we ran a survey to ask where you would like future parking infrastructure for bikes and scooters.

We also asked you what is working well with our current bike and scooter parking, and what is not working, so we can make improvements.

The feedback provided through the survey has informed this instalment of bike and scooter parking throughout Hamilton.

How much will all this cost and how can Council afford it?

Transport Choices projects are funded up to 90% by the Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF), not taxpayer or road user charges. Councils fund the balance of project costs. Funding for Transport Choices is administered by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.  The budget for this project is $785,400. Council’s share is $78, 540.

What is the purpose of these projects?

The aim of the projects is to make low carbon travel more attractive and accessible for people who walk, bus and bike, through fixing unsafe and difficult parts of key travel routes.

Walking, cycling and public transport upgrades are a key part of Council’s strategy to make the city more accessible for more people. The Council’s transport strategy, Access Hamilton - Ara Kootuitui Kirikiriroa, has a strong focus on improving safety and connectivity between suburbs as well as reducing emissions and pollution.
