Project Summary

What we're doing

Bike parklets are bike parking facilities that include planters, seating and bike racks. Pedestrians and people on bikes can use these spaces to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the city.

Why we're doing it

These projects are funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Transport Choices programme and will help create a connected network across the city, supporting Council’s move to a low emissions transport system in response to climate change.

What does this look like?

Barton Street

We installed a temporary bike parklet on Barton Street outside Torpedo7 in late 2021, as a trial. This new parklet takes up one on-street carpark. The temporary bike parklet has been successful so we are planning to install a permanent, upgraded parklet.

What we’re planning for Barton Street

The permanent bike parklet includes:

  • bike stands
  • a seating area with a wooden bench
  • landscaping and planting to create an attractive and enclosed space.

Grey Street

We installed a temporary bike parklet on Grey Street outside Grey Street Kitchen and Lord of the Fries in late 2021. The new parklet takes up three on-street carparks. The temporary bike parklet has been successful so we are planning to install a permanent, upgraded parklet.

What we’re planning for Grey Street

The permanent bike parklet includes:

  • bike stands
  • a seating area with wooden benches, stools and tables
  • landscaping and planting to create an attractive and enclosed space.

Braid Road (St Andrews shops)

We’re planning to replace three angled carparks outside the St Andrews shops with a bike parklet.

What we’re planning for Braid Road

The permanent bike parklet includes:

  • bike stands
  • a seating area
  • planting to create an attractive and enclosed space.

This project will

  • Permanent sites for bike and scooter parking

  • Improve streetscaping and seating

  • Support mixed modes of transport
