Project Summary

What we're doing

We’re installing new pedestrian/bike level crossings at the Claudelands East intersection, and at Brooklyn Road/Claudelands Road (east end).

The upgrades include:

  • new fencing to create a maze, which improves people’s field of vision
  • new signals and lights
  • automatic pedestrian gates, to increase safety for people crossing the railway line
  • new trail matting within the railway corridor to reduce trip and slip hazards.

Why we're doing it

A Level Crossing Safety Impact Assessment (LCSIA) recommended automatic pedestrian/bike gates at the rail crossings, as we are expecting an increase in the number of people walking and biking in the coming years.

We are also expecting increased future use of the rail line prompted by development in the city such as the Ruakura inland port.

This project will

  • Provide safer crossings for pedestrians and people on bikes

  • Improve the bike network connectivity

  • Increase visibility at a busy crossing
