Project Summary

What we're doing

We’re planning changes to Hyde Avenue and Grandview Road in Nawton, to make it safer and easier for people to access the shopping centre, community hub, local park and schools.

The upgrades include:

  • Reduce the speed limit from 50km/h to 30km/h on parts of Hyde Avenue, Grandview Road and Clancy Place outside the shopping centre – which aligns with future speed limit changes around Nawton School.
  • Install raised pedestrian crossings on Hyde Avenue and Grandview Road.
  • Extend the kerb and build a pedestrian island at the intersection of Rodney Street and Hyde Avenue, to encourage slower vehicle turning speeds and create a safer crossing location.
  • Upgrade the bus stop outside 67 Hyde Avenue with a bus shelter, paved area and accessible kerb.

Why we're doing it

The project supports the Waikato Regional Council’s Meteor bus service, linking the east and west of Hamilton. The upgraded bus stop and calmer streets will enable people to safely access this frequent bus service.

This project is funded by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s Transport Choices programme and it will help create a connected network across the city, supporting Council’s move to a low emissions transport system in response to climate change.

This project will

  • Improve infrastructure for bus service

  • Reduce speed limit at key locations

  • Safer environment for pedestrians
