Project Summary

What we're doing

We’re improving connections to the Western Rail Trail for people walking and biking.

The upgrades include:

  • Widen the footpath to a shared path between the Western Rail Trail and the intersection of Kahikatea Drive and Quentin Drive.
  • Upgrade the signalised pedestrian crossing by adding a crossing for people on bikes.
  • Renewal of the shared path on Gallagher Drive where required.
  • Add path markings near driveways on Gallagher Drive.
  • Install a raised safety platform on Clow Place to slow down vehicle traffic and provide a level crossing point for people walking and biking.

Why we're doing it

Off-road upgrades to Kahikatea Drive and Gallagher Drive will provide a safe link from Melville and Deanwell, to Innes Common and the central city. This project is part of a package of work to improve accessibility for people walking and biking to the Western Rail Trail – a 2.7km off-road shared path connecting Hamilton’s southwestern suburbs to the central city.

This project will

  • Improve biking and pedestrian safety

  • Ensure connectivity to the Western Rail Trail

  • Allow for future growth in city-wide bike network
