We’re upgrading the Seddon Road wastewater pump station and installing a new pipeline to connect the station to a different part of the network. This will give us more capacity for growth in the central city as well as reducing the risks of overflows. The project will also support housing outcomes in the central city and we have secured funding from government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund to fully fund the project.

Our wastewater network carries wastewater (from toilets, sinks, showers etc) from individual properties to pump stations, and then to larger pipes called Interceptors which carry the wastewater to our treatment plant in Pukete. It’s like an underground road network with individual driveways linking to streets, then to highways.
Our pump station at Seddon Road currently links to the Central Interceptor. This pipeline is reaching capacity, so we are upgrading the station and installing a new pipeline to connect the Seddon Road station to the Western Interceptor.
The new pipeline will travel west along Seddon Road and Rimu Street, under Forest Lake Road, then south on Tui Avenue, before crossing under the North Island Main Trunk Railway and State Highway 1C to connect near Avalon Drive.
As one of the fastest growing urban areas in the country, Council has secured a grant of $150.6m for infrastructure to support housing outcomes in the central city. This project supports this programme and has a total budget (including contingency) of around $6.6m.
The overall project is expected to take 10 months between June 2026 and March 2027 but will likely be completed in stages along the route.
