Peachgrove Road - Wilson Street to Frances Street

What's the problem?

Peachgrove Road is a busy route, particularly for students and parents travelling to Peachgrove Intermediate and Hamilton Boys’ High School.

For many years, the community has raised concerns about safety for drivers, people walking, people on bikes, or crossing the road. Key issues include:

high vehicle speeds
poor visibility and unsafe crossing points
congestion and illegal parking during school times
regular near misses.

It was a part of a programme called Eastern Pathways, to improve accessibility through and to eastern Hamilton, better connecting the city centre to our university and schools – find out more about Eastern Pathways here.

What we're doing

We’re working with the local community including schools, residents and businesses surrounding Peachgrove Road between Wilson Street and Frances Street to understand travel behaviours and need to make improvements for all road users, especially children and students.

At the City Delivery Committee on 30 April 2026, Elected Members will review local community feedback and data and decide the next steps for the project.

Current proposed safety improvements include:

Reallocated and upgraded bus stops.
New and upgraded pedestrian crossings.
Shared paths on both sides of the road and upgraded kerbs.
Removal of on-street car parking outside schools.
To slow traffic and improve pedestrian access installation of raised zebra crossings at Hamilton Boys’ High School entrance, Kingsford Mews, Scott Avenue and Wilson Street.

What's the safety record of this section of road?

Between 2015-2024, plus available results for 2025 (up to June 2025), there have been 29 reported crashes on Peachgrove Road between Frances Street and Wilson Street:

21 non-injury
7 minor injury
1 serious injury - a motorcyclist

Of the minor injury crashes:

3 involved pedestrians
1 involved a cyclist

All the minor injury crashes involved students who were struck by oncoming vehicles.

Near misses are common.

What happened to Eastern Pathways?

Eastern Pathways was co-funded by the New Zealand Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi).

In 2023, co-funding for local councils was significantly reduced and reprioritised. As a result, Peachgrove Road between Wilson Street and Frances Street was one of the few projects that received funding to continue.

How much will this project cost?

The estimated cost for project management, design and construction is $5.5 million.

What's parking like in this area?

This area can hold around 52 parked vehicles at any one time. It is not well suited for all-day parking with two large schools (more than 3500 students) with hundreds of cars arriving for school pick up and drop off.

On a school weekday:

Mornings are the busiest, between 8am and 9am, more than 400 vehicles can arrive.
Afternoons around 3pm more than 100 vehicles can arrive.
