Project summary

What we're doing

We’re upgrading Ruakura Road to create a safer environment for road users, pedestrians, and people on bikes.

With the on-road section of Ruakura Road now upgraded, the team are now working on the final off-road works.

Why we're doing it

This priority project provides a critical link to the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway and supports our commitment of shaping a city that's easy to live in, explore, and connect.

The original Ruakura Road had deep ditches beside the traffic lanes, uncontrolled intersections, and limited kerbing, lighting, and footpaths. Upgrades to Ruakura Road make it safer for all road users.

What does this look like?

The upgrade includes traffic lights at the intersections of Ruakura Lane/Ruakura Road and Ruakura Road/Knighton Road, as well as shared paths and dedicated bike paths off the main roadway for people to enjoy.

This project will

  • Be connect Ruakura to the Waikato Expressway

  • Improve safety for all road users

  • Support and shape new housing developments in Ruakura

Project features

  • A road for the future

Ruakura will become home for up to 8000 Hamiltonians who will benefit from brand new, future-focused infrastructure such as new and upgraded roads.
  • Prioritising safety

The upgraded road will create a safer environment for road users, pedestrians, and people on bikes.
  • Walk, scoot, bike
