Hamilton’s oldest sister city relationship was formalised on 14 May 1984.
Japan is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most important partners. We share common values and a mutual commitment to stability, growth and development in our region and globally.
At a city level, our relationship with Saitama City (Urawa City at the time) began in 1984, when then-Mayor Sir Ross Jansen established a sister city partnership. Over the past four decades, our partnership has grown strongly through economic development, tourism and education opportunities, cultural and sporting ties, business connections and people to people links.
In 2024, we are proud to celebrate 40 years of our sister city relationship with Saitama City. As Hamilton's longest-standing sister city, this anniversary is testament to the enduring friendship and strong bonds between our two cities. We look forward to hosting the Mayor of Saitama in October 2024 to mark this special occasion and further strengthen the strong bonds between our two cities.
One of the most special aspects of our friendship is the cultural exchange between our schools. Each year, Hamilton eagerly looks forward to welcoming more than 70 students from junior high schools in Saitama. This cultural exchange enriches our community and provides an opportunity for Saitama's students to live with local families, take part in school life, and visit Council and tourist spots in Hamilton and the Waikato. These exchanges create lasting friendships and memories.
In 2012, Saitama gifted Hamilton the incredible Mikoshi shrine, which is displayed in Hamilton City Council’s foyer. This beautiful shrine dates back to 1892 and was crafted by the renowned Miyamoto company. Having it here means our Japanese community, particularly mothers, can celebrate Japanese history and culture with their New Zealand born children and keep alive those cultural connections into the next generation.
The beautiful Japanese garden at Hamilton Gardens also serves as a reminder of our close ties, established with support from the Japan World Exposition 1970 Commemorative Fund and the former Urawa City.
