Who can enrol to vote

You can enrol to vote as a resident if you:

  • are 18 years or older on or before 10 October 2025,
  • are a New Zealand Citizen or permanent resident, and
  • have lived in New Zealand continuously for 12 months or more at some time in your life.

If you’re enrolled to vote for the parliamentary elections, then you’re automatically enrolled for Council elections too.

  • Call 0800 36 76 56
  • Freetext your name and address to 3676
  • Download and complete this enrolment form and email it to enrol@vote.nz or post it to Electoral Commission, Freepost 2 Enrol, PO Box 190, Wellington 6140

Maaori roll

The Maaori Electoral Option is a choice for Maaori about which electoral roll to be on: the Maaori roll or the general roll.

This option closes three months before election day, so if you want to change rolls you must do this before midnight Thursday 10 July 2025.

When to enrol

The Electoral Roll closes on Friday 1 August 2025. If you enrol after this date, you will need to cast a ‘special vote’ at the election.

How to enrol if you are a ratepayer for Hamilton but you don’t live here

If you own property in Hamilton but live elsewhere you may be able to enrol as a non-resident ratepayer elector and vote in both areas.
