Hamilton City Council has approved improvements at the intersection of East Street and Peachgrove Road to make it safer and easier for everyone to get around, whether they are driving, walking, or cycling.
The approved improvements include:

restricting right turns and straight-through movements from East Street (West)
-
delivering a shared pathway for pedestrians and people on bikes

installing a signalised pedestrian crossing on Peachgrove Road.
At yesterday's (1 September 2026) City Infrastructure Committee meeting, Elected Members considered four options for the intersection. Councillors could have alternatively decided on a full closure of East Street (West) at Peachgrove Road, a partial closure, or to retain the status quo.
Engagement with the directly affected community was carried out from 3 June to 1 July 2026. Community feedback helped inform the decision, with the highest proportion of respondents supporting option three restricting right turns and straight-through movements out of East Street (West).
Council's Urban Transport Manager Martin Parkes said the approved design strikes a balance between improving safety and connectivity, while maintaining access for residents, emergency services, and vehicles associated with events at Claudelands Park and the Event Centre.
"We know this intersection is an important connection for the East Street community. These improvements provide a practical solution that improves safety and connections for people walking and cycling through the area, while maintaining access for residents."
The approved improvements have an indicative cost of $1.39 million. Construction is expected to take place by July 2027.
Brooklyn Road crossing point
Council also looked at adding a pedestrian crossing point and kerb buildouts at East Street and Brooklyn Road. Councillors decided not to progress with the Brooklyn Road improvements yesterday but will revisit the decision as part of the next Long-Term Plan (LTP) process in early 2027.
