Hamiltonians can put their bins out on their usual collection day by 7am, as there are no changes to kerbside rubbish and recycling collections over the Matariki long weekend (Friday 10 July).
Hamilton City Council’s Director of Resource Recovery, Sarah Wilson, said last month (May 2026) Hamiltonians saved 331,000kg of food scraps and 186,000kg of glass from landfill.
“Matariki, our Maaori New Year, is the perfect time to reaffirm our role as a kaitiaki (guardian) of the environment and aim to save even more recycling and food scraps from landfill,” said Wilson.
“Let’s use this time to reflect on how we can improve our recycling and waste reduction efforts. Simple actions like correctly sorting your waste can make a huge difference. If you’re unsure which bin an item belongs in, use the bin sorter tool on our website.”
