Hamilton Kirikiriroa will celebrate many of the cultures that make the city a great place to live when Welcoming Week returns from Friday 4 September to Sunday 13 September.
This annual event celebrates not only those new to Hamilton but everyone who calls the city home. Following this year’s theme ‘Together we belong’ the week provides the community an opportunity to learn about other cultures, grow their connections and celebrate the diversity of our city.
Hamilton City Council and Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa (THaWK) have partnered with Glenview Community Centre, Shama Ethnic Women's Centre, Refugee Orientation Centre Trust, Hamilton Multicultural Services Trust, Free FM, Tangata Tiriti – Treaty People Inc, and many other community organisations to deliver this year's programme.
There are several events across the week, including dance and music performances, kapa haka, cultural and community displays, food stalls, Treaty of Waitangi training, a tour of a marae and so much more.
Hamilton City Councilor Emma Pike said Welcoming Week is an opportunity to celebrate our diversity, connect with one another, and ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging in our community.
“I encourage people to get involved, meet someone new, and join us in celebrating what makes our city such a vibrant place to live,” said Pike.
Originally from the Philippines, Hamilton City Council Ethnic Development Advisor Jovi Abellanosa has called Hamilton Kirikiriroa home for the past 18 years.
"I'm one of many migrants who found support and a sense of belonging through the Settlement Centre Waikato," said Abellanosa.
"Feeling welcomed can make all the difference when you're settling into a new community, which is why Welcoming Week is so important."
