Celebrate Matariki in Kirikiriroa

Hamilton City Council’s Maanawatia a Matariki is back for 2026 to celebrate the rising of the star cluster Matariki that marks the Maaori New Year - Te Maatahi o te Tau. Rally your whaanau and friends together, and enjoy a night of rekareka (fun) and entertainment.
Head down to Innes Common for a family-friendly evening filled with live music, kapa haka, food trucks, markets and more. You can even catch a Hamilton bus for free to and from the event!

Plantathon is back

Back by popular demand is the Nature in the City Plantathon. It’s a free, fun, and hands-on way to get involved in planting native vegetation and restoring Hamilton’s natural spaces. Bring your friends and whaanau along and be part of something meaningful. Don’t forget to sign up below.

Celebrate Matariki with maramataka expert Piripi Lambert as he reveals how the night sky guides the natural world. Discover how generations of Maaori knowledge, shaped by stars, moon, seasons, plants and animals, connect with the tiny wonders of Microsculpture, where insects are shown in breathtaking detail.
This talk is free, but registration is essential.
