Hamilton City Council has paused the fluoridation of Hamilton’s drinking water supply following an issue at the Waiora Drinking Water Treatment Plant.
A leak was identified in the fluoridation equipment today, Friday 1 May 2026. The problem area was immediately isolated and all material was safely contained within a purpose built spill-proof area.
There is no impact on the safety or quality of drinking water, or on the environment.
Staff have notified the Water Services Authority (Taumata Arowai) and the Ministry of Health which is the regulator of fluoride dosing.
Decision-making on fluoridation shifted from local authorities (councils) to the Director-General of Health in the provisions of the Health (Fluoridation of Drinking Water) Amendment Act 2021.
Local authorities are required to fluoridate a water supply if directed to do so by the Director-General of Health.
It is estimated fluoridation could resume in two to three weeks.
